Socorro Giant Mantas
The Revillagigedo Archipelago possesses a unique ecosystem with many endemic plant and animal species and is often called Mexico’s Galapagos. It is as remote, as diverse, as pristine, and, even less inhabited than the famous treasure of Ecuador. For divers, this is the place to go for unforgettable manta diving, which is as extraordinary as the archipelago itself. This is the only place on the planet where you will – guaranteed – dive and interact with giant mantas.
The giant mantas here are the true giant mantas, species manta birostris. They are largest of mantas anywhere in the world and truly majestic in their movements. They swim by moving their wing-like pectoral fins, gliding through the waters like birds in the air with grace and fluidity – except when they decide to be acrobats and leap high from the water like dolphins. You will be awed by these gorgeous creatures that seem to have a playful side. They come in very close – less than three feet! – make eye contact with you and then swim along beside you – totally on their terms. What is even more extraordinary, mantas will often wait at the dive site while you take your surface interval and be there to greet you on your next dive.
Shark spotting is also very good at Socorro Island with common sightings of silky, galapagos, hammerhead, whitetip and silvertip sharks. Pods of dolphins are always present, and whale sharks are usually seen in the first half of the season from November to December. The second half the season January to February here has a population of 1,200 humpbacks moving into the island’s waters. So, whenever you can make it, it’s going to be fantastic!
